Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

My family constantly tell me there’s old films I need to watch and this is one of them. My brother has been badgering on at me for ages to watch this and because of the fact that it’s over 2 hours long I always choose something else. Well finally BBC 1 showed it on New Years Day and I was forced to sit down with my family and watch it..

I wish I’d watched it sooner! It was brilliant! I love many versions of Robin Hood. The BBC 1 series starring Jonas Armstrong, the Disney version with the cartoon fox and the updated version with Taron Egerton. So why I thought I wouldn’t enjoy this 1991 version starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman I’ll never know!

Kevin Costner stars as our beloved Outlaw, Robin of Locksley who returns to Nottingham from the Third Crusade with Azeem (Morgan Freeman) to discover his father has been murdered and Nottingham has been taken over by the cruel Sheriff and his cousin: Guy of Gisborne (Michael Wincott).

Robin Hood and Azeem

The story of your average tale of good vs evil. Robin stealing from the rich to give to the poor while working with a band of Merry Men and falling in love with Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). This Warner Bros. adaptation is full of sword fighting, bow and arrows, death, love and some brilliant quips from characters.

Alan Rickman is deliciously evil as the Sheriff and makes you hate him from the moment he steps on screen. Morgan Freeman is as always, a wonderful actor who plays his part as Robin’s friend brilliantly. Finally, Kevin Costner plays our beloved hero brilliantly; in this adaptation his fights are great, his bow and arrow skills are legendary and his impulsive and dastardly ideas create some epic action sequences throughout this film. He is definitely the standout character as he does a brilliant job playing the iconic hero.

Alan Rickman as Sherriff of Nottingham

Even though it was over two hours, it didn’t feel like it! Time just seemed to fly by as I was pulled into Nottingham and waited with bated breath to see if our hero was triumphant in his quest to avenge his fathers death and save the people of Nottingham.

Anyone who’s up for an action/adventure adaptation film of the brilliant character Robin Hood should check out this marvellous tale of good vs evil! This classic film with the iconic Bryan Adams song ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You’ (which is always number one or two in a music channels countdown of the greatest movie songs) was a great success and I’m glad my brother pestered me to watch it!
