Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

My family constantly tell me there’s old films I need to watch and this is one of them. My brother has been badgering on at me for ages to watch this and because of the fact that it’s over 2 hours long I always choose something else. Well finally BBC 1 showed it on New Years Day and I was forced to sit down with my family and watch it..

Main Film Poster

I wish I’d watched it sooner! It was brilliant! I love many versions of Robin Hood. The BBC 1 series starring Jonas Armstrong, the Disney version with the cartoon fox and the updated version with Taron Egerton. So why I thought I wouldn’t enjoy this 1991 version starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman I’ll never know!

Kevin Costner stars as our beloved Outlaw, Robin of Locksley who returns to Nottingham from the Third Crusade with Azeem (Morgan Freeman) to discover his father has been murdered and Nottingham has been taken over by the cruel Sheriff and his cousin: Guy of Gisborne (Michael Wincott).

Robin Hood and Azeem

The story of your average tale of good vs evil. Robin stealing from the rich to give to the poor while working with a band of Merry Men and falling in love with Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). This Warner Bros. adaptation is full of sword fighting, bow and arrows, death, love and some brilliant quips from characters.

Robin Hood and Maid Marian

Alan Rickman is deliciously evil as the Sheriff and makes you hate him from the moment he steps on screen. Morgan Freeman is as always, a wonderful actor who plays his part as Robin’s friend brilliantly. Finally, Kevin Costner plays our beloved hero brilliantly; in this adaptation his fights are great, his bow and arrow skills are legendary and his impulsive and dastardly ideas create some epic action sequences throughout this film. He is definitely the standout character as he does a brilliant job playing the iconic hero.

Alan Rickman as Sherriff of Nottingham

Even though it was over two hours, it didn’t feel like it! Time just seemed to fly by as I was pulled into Nottingham and waited with bated breath to see if our hero was triumphant in his quest to avenge his fathers death and save the people of Nottingham.

Anyone who’s up for an action/adventure adaptation film of the brilliant character Robin Hood should check out this marvellous tale of good vs evil! This classic film with the iconic Bryan Adams song ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You’ (which is always number one or two in a music channels countdown of the greatest movie songs) was a great success and I’m glad my brother pestered me to watch it!

Musicals

You can’t go wrong with a trip to the theatre to see a musical! Looking through your programme, the opening notes to some of the most iconic overtures ever, the cheers, the laughter, the sadness, the ice cream break in the interval and you always leave in either tears or with the biggest smile on your face. With Covid and quarantine the doors of West End and Broadway have closed, shutting some of the most iconic shows that haven’t closed in for some cases over 30 years!

Sadly, for me this meant four shows I was meant to see prior to lockdown have been cancelled and rearranged for this year! The government are currently not giving much hope to art industries and no help in lifting those curtains. So, I thought I’d look back on nine of the shows I’ve seen and tell you all about them and remind you why musical theatre is so important to many of us around the world!

Mamma Mia!

The first show I ever saw in the West End! This jukebox musical leaves you smiling from ear to ear!

Set in Greece, this show follows Sophie on a hunt to discover who her father is with the help of her mothers old diary just days before her wedding…

The show is cheerful; based on the karaoke classic hits by ABBA. If you’ve not seen the show; you’ve more than likely seen the film and so you know what you’re missing out on! The show is so much better though because you’re so engrossed in the music, the jokes and the pure joy of cheering along to Dancing Queen, Waterloo and S.O.S. Mamma Mia is a feel-good musical for all the family to enjoy.

The Lion King

My second trip to the West End took my family to my sisters dream show. No one was more excited that she was but we all came out singing The Circle of Life!

Most of you probably already know the story due to the classic Disney film but to sum it up. A family dispute leads to tragedy and a young lion must learn what the circle of life really is. Basically, imagine a more family friendly version of Hamlet with lions and music!

This family show based on the Disney classic will have you crying and laughing within minutes of each other, it is such a brilliant retelling of the film. But the thing that is so good about The Lion King is the art and the movement. You become so enraptured by the story that you forget that these are people wearing masks because they embody the characters so well. Plus, if that doesn’t already excite you then the music of Elton John and Tim Rice is the icing on an already delicious cake!

Aladdin

A recent trip to the West End, only in 2019. My 18th birthday treat to a show I’d always wanted to see due to my own love of the animated classic.

Another Disney classic turned into a brilliant show. This story follows the street rat Aladdin in a classic tale of rags to riches with the help of a magical Genie and a beautiful princess named Jasmine.

From the moment it begins you feel as if you’ve been transported to Agrabah on a magic carpet yourself! The music, the colour, the glitter, the dancing and THE GENIE! This show is not complete without the wonderful Genie, his magic is the essence of this magnificent show. His joy, happiness, enthusiasm and talents is what carries this magical carpet ride.

Les Misérables

I don’t often cry but this show had me in tears! The music, the talent and the complete and utter heartbreak.

Set against the backdrop of The French Revolution, this show follows the story of the wrongly imprisoned Jean Valjean as he tries to become a better man while hiding from Inspector Javert.

This is one of them shows where you leave the theatre wishing you hadn’t worn mascara. Even if you don’t love Les Mis you appreciate the work behind it. It’s entirely sung from start to finish; the members of the orchestras hands must sting by the end of this show! This show is full of brilliantly created characters that break your heart from beginning to end. If you have the chance to watch Les Mis, go do it! The costumes, the set and the music is breath taking.

Blood Brothers

Twin brothers split apart at birth become best friends and grow up together coming together from completely different backgrounds.

This is the only show on this list I’ve seen more than once. Why? Because it was so amazing the first time, I wasn’t going to turn down the chance to see it again. The music is brilliant, the comedy leaves you in stitches, the story is breath-taking and it breaks your heart. But then what else would you expect from a musical based on a play by Willy Russell?

This Liverpool show about the working class shows what life was like during the recession in the 1980’s. The two brothers who grow up apart are brilliantly created and developed characters. My favourite thing about the show is you watch the characters from the ages of 7 to late teens, early twenties and they’re still played by the same actor. This show could have got children to play them in their younger days but they don’t. There is nothing funnier than watch someone in their mid-thirties run around as if they were a child playing Cowboys and Indians.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

A musical I’d never heard of but basically fell in love with by the end of the first song! This musical based on a true story is about a teenage boy who wants to be a drag queen! It follows Jamie New as he struggles with bullying and a lack of acceptance in his pursuit to become a professional Drag Queen.

The loving relationship between Jamie and his Mom was poignantly portrayed when I went to see it with the original West End cast and going to see a show I knew nothing about made it even more exciting. My favourite thing about this show is how relatable it is as any teenager will love the other school kids and recognise people from their own school days!

The glitz, glamour, comedy, heartbreak and amazing soundtrack makes this an epic show that I was so lucky to see. I was even lucky enough to have seats towards the front of the theatre. I was meant to see the touring version of this show last year but that was sadly cancelled due to Covid but as soon as allowed I will be back to see it once again. Plus, a trailer was recently released for the upcoming film based on the show so that will definitely be a cinema trip for me!

Summer Holiday

You know the iconic Cliff Richard song ‘We’re all going on a Summer Holiday, no more working for a week or two.’ (Admit it, you sang that didn’t you?) Well, that song is the main one for this show based on a hit movie starring Cliff Richard and Lauri Peters.

This show follows Don and his three friends as they travel to Athens on a double decker bus. On the way they have loads of fun travelling and manage to pick up a singing trio and a runaway singer hiding from an overbearing mother.

The movie is more popular than the show and I’ve only seen the show go on tour once. But being a big fan of the film, I had to take a trip to see this show and it didn’t disappoint. It’s fun, colourful, cheery and all round just puts you in a really good mood! It’s full of comedic moments and all the songs are really catchy! If you never get a chance to see the show, watch the film because it’s one of my favourite classics!

Wicked

The origin story of The Wicked Witch of The West and The Good Witch, Glinda. This musical based on characters from the classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’ tells a wickedly brilliant story that is ‘Defying Gravity’!

This show follows Elphaba a young lady who is seen as an outcast due to her unusual green skin. We follow her tale to the University Shiz where she becomes best friends with popular roommate Glinda and we finally discover what made this witch so Wicked.

This show has always been incredibly popular and once I heard ‘Defying Gravity’ in Glee it made my want to see the show even more. The story is clever in the ways in which it weaves in the original story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, the music is spectacular and the characters are brilliant. This backstory adds a whole new layer to a popular story and reminds us that a book should never be judged by its cover and not everything is as it first appears. It is one show I dream of going to see again.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

What could potentially be my favourite classic musical! This stage show musical based on the 1968 film starring Dick Van Dyke is delightful, delectable and sweet.

This story follows inventor Caractacus Potts, his two children Jeremy and Jemima and the wealthy Truly Scrumptious on a magical adventure in a car that can fly! When Caractacus, Truly and the children end up in a land where there are no children, it is up to them to restore the love and kindness in the horrid land of Vulgaria.

This colourful, family story is full of joy and magic and is fun for all ages. The music is beautiful, the story is wonderful and the characters are hilarious! It is probably my favourite musical and it always manage to bring a massive smile to my face!

So that is just nine of my favourite musicals that I have loved and lucky enough to have seen live on stage. Hopefully, I’ll make some return trips to the Theatre to rewatch some of them and there’s definitely many more I want to see. So, fingers crossed this COVID goes away quickly so I can get back to the theatre!

Murder Mystery

This film starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston from 2019 looked like it would tick all the right boxes! A stellar cast including Luke Evans and Gemma Arterton, it does what it says on the tin it is a murder mystery and it’s a comedy. All in all, it sounds like a good film, right?

Main Film Poster

Sadly, I didn’t particularly enjoy it, but my issue with this film was I didn’t find anything extremely funny. Nothing in this film made me cackle. I wasn’t crying with laughter; the odd line did make me smile but a comedy should really leave you in stitches. For me I preferred the actual mystery behind this film. I was more intrigued by discovering who the killer was and why they had murdered elderly billionaire Malcolm Quince.

Malcom Quince played by Terence Stamp

The films follow Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston who play married couple Nick and Audrey Spitz on their long-awaited trip to Europe where they meet Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans). Charles invites them on board the Yacht of his billionaire uncle Malcolm Quince (Terence Stamp) to celebrate his upcoming wedding. However, when Malcolm is suddenly murdered by one of the guests all of whom are close to him. The people aboard the boat suggest Nick and Audrey could be responsible and it’s a race against time to discover who the true killer is.

Main characters Audrey and Nick as played
by Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler

This then follows an outlandish plot of Nick and Audrey investigating every potential suspect. Whilst also trying to evade arrest from the police who believe them to be the killers. The unpredictable twists and turns of this film left me constantly guessing who the killer was and the curve ball at the end left me satisfied that the killer wasn’t as predictable as I expected it to be. However, with this being an Adam Sandler film I expected more comedy and crazy behaviour and was left a little disheartened for this reason.

Charles Cavendish (Far left) as
played by Luke Evans with Nick and Audrey

The standout star of this film for me was Jennifer Aniston she played Audrey brilliantly. Her comedic timing was impeccable, she looked stunning and was absolutely badass in trying to solve the case! And one particular scene from towards the end of the movie proved that she is such a cool yet classy woman.

Jennifer Aniston as Audrey Spitz

Overall, this Netflix original probably won’t be one I’ll personally be watching again however I will say the mystery side of it kept me guessing all the way up until the end! This film was in no way predictable in its crimes, I just expected it to be funnier.

Happy New Year

Well, it’s been a while... Sorry it’s been so long but a slightly busy life, Uni and a lack of creativity has kept me away from here. Sadly, I think I missed the one year anniversary of this blog so Happy 1 year to us! (Lifts coffee cup in a cheers motion)

In the brief period where the shops were open, I was busy with work a job that has now once again been put on pause due to COVID! But we carry on and hope to go back soon. As well as that we had the new uni life on Zoom which I’ve decided to name ‘Zuni’. (Some of my best work I know!) But anyways I’ve learnt that zoom sucks and I’d love to go back into the classroom to actually see my pals! But I did get to create a performance over zoom and that was fun and new. But nothing beats performing on a stage and I hope to be back up there soon, fingers crossed.

My birthday, Christmas and New Year went by like a flash as they always do! They were as wonderful as could be given the current circumstances. I didn’t have a big night out with my friends like I would have wanted to, but my family still made my birthday as good as it could have been. Christmas for us is just those who live in my house so our plans weren’t ruined unlike everybody else’s so that was nice! It was calm and peaceful just the way I like it!

New Years was sad not going to a big party and seeing friends but just spending it with my family was lovely! Plus, drinks, music, board games and fireworks were a wonderful way to bring in the new year! So that’s about everything, I think. Once again sorry for being so quiet but that’s life! My plan is to be a bit more active while I have this spare time before uni starts up again! I have a few ideas for blogs to go up so hopefully a couple will go up in the coming weeks. But until then...

 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Atonement

2016: When I was in school my English teacher had us practice exam questions by reading passages of books so we were prepared for the unseen questions (for anyone who hasn’t done an English exam you used to get a passage from a book you had never studied that you had to analyse and answer questions on). One lesson we had to read a section from Atonement by Ian McEwan. This book is set in 1935 England, during World War 2 and present day England. It follows a young girl who’s mistaken lie ruins lives and how she reflects on that as she gets older.

Front Cover of the Novel

Now during this lesson our teacher told us this had been adapted into a BAFTA and Academy Award winning film released in 2007. She then proceeded to show us the trailer to this film which showed that the two main characters were played by Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. I am a huge James McAvoy fan and have loved him for many years and even though I’m not as big of a Keira Knightley fan I do quite like some of her works (especially Pirates of the Caribbean). The trailer and my teachers explanation made this film sound quite interesting so I wanted to watch it but never got round to it.

The Film Poster

Cut to 2020 and I found this film to be on Netflix so one morning when I had the house to myself I decided to finally give it a go.

This long explanation now leads to me to tell you that I’m going to start doing film reviews for films I’ve seen whether they’ve been out for years or have recently been released...

This review may contain a few spoilers but I will try to keep them to a minimum.

So onto the review:

Long story short Atonement follows Cecelia (Keira Knightley) and Robbie’s (James McAvoy) romance. But their romance is ripped apart when Cecelia’s younger sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan) accuses Robbie of a crime she believes him to have committed. The film then follows the three characters as they continue their lives following the fall out from Robbie’s arrest. Robbie is sent to jail and then drafted to the army and both Cecelia and Briony become Nurses during World War Two however the two sisters have not spoken since Robbie’s arrest.

An Opening Scene featuring Cecelia and Robbie

This film follows the tragedies that struck during World War Two and shows how one lie can have consequences for everyone involved. It is a simple mistake of putting two and two together and making five but all actions have consequences and the ones played out in this movie are fatal.

Briony (played by Saoirse Ronan)

The 2 hour film is slightly slow in parts but the romance between Robbie and Cecelia makes you want to continue watching to see what the outcome of Briony’s lies will be. However the twists of this film are what made it so engaging and heart-breaking. This film is yet another example of the tragedies of war. But also gives you an insight into the life of a Nurse during the War. As well as this the film is full of many of Britain’s most iconic stars including: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Mays, Vanessa Redgrave, Alfie Allen and Brenda Blethyn. Plus the actors previously mentioned.

Paul Marshal (Benedict Cumberbatch)

Tommy Nettle (Daniel Mays)

It has moments of beautiful cinematography and the music throughout is so poignant and the characters are portrayed brilliantly. Personally I felt that James McAvoy was the standout character as the wrongly convicted Robbie Turner. I felt for his character from the moment he first appeared on the screen right up to the closing credits.

Cecelia Tallis (Keira Knightley)

Robbie Turner (James McAvoy)

I won’t be rating these films as I feel all films are great in one way or another even if I don’t particularly enjoy them. However I will say that I definitely recommend this film, it’s made me want to read the book that it is adapted from and I’m very thankful that my English teacher made me analyse the description of Cecelia.

David Tennant Does A Podcast With...

If you follow me on Instagram (@thelastofmythoughts) you’ll know how much I love David Tennant. It doesn’t matter how uninterested in a show or film I am, if he’s in it I’m gonna at least give it a go. So when I discovered he was doing a podcast I had to give it a try and it’s changed my life. I absolutely love it!

Promotional Image from Series 1

The premise of David Tennant’s podcast which is currently releasing its second season weekly is David Tennant spends about 45 - 50 minutes interviewing a celebrity. These have included people he’s worked with such as Catherine Tate and Jodie Whittaker. People he’s really good friends with like Michael Sheen and Olivia Coleman and people he is a big fan of like Jim Parsons and James Corden.

Catherine Tate (Series 1)

James Corden (Series 1)

I’ve spent many hours sat listening to this interview that seems more like I’m eavesdropping on a chat between two friends! I personally like to listen to a podcast while printing off pictures on my sprocket printer and scrapbooking some of my best memories!

Michael Sheen (Series 1)

Olivia Colman (Series 1)

His podcast guests range from big famous actors such as Ian McKellen and Whoopi Goldberg to political people such as Gordon Brown and Stacey Abrams. I find myself fascinated as he speaks to these people about their lives, how they got into whatever it is they do, some of the trials and tribulations they’ve had during their lives and what it is they intend to do next.

Whoopi Goldberg (Series 1)

Ian McKellen (Series 1)

Even during the current state of the World he's still managed to create podcasts with people from their own houses through zoom calls. This most recent series of zoom call, podcast interviews has included stars such as: Judi Dench, George Takei and Dany Levy.

George Takei (Series 2)

Judi Dench (Series 2)

These people recount hilarious stories from behind the scenes of some of the biggest films and shows. But they also sometimes delve into more deep and tougher times of their lives that can sometimes leave you feeling a little bit emotional. You get to understand these people on a more personal level as they bare their lives to both David Tennant and the audience who listen in.

It is a podcast I greatly look forward to and I hope it continues on to a season 3 so I can spend more hours learning about these famous people and their lives. Also as a plus note there is now merch! So if I do not receive a David Tennant Does A Podcast With travel coffee cup for Christmas I'll be really disappointed.

 Remember Me

I always try to keep this blog a happy, light hearted place. There’s no dark and serious stories on this page. During the COVID 19 pandemic I’ve tried to give you ideas to stay entertained rather than give you my political viewpoints. But a film I watched recently has broken my heart and gave me inspiration to write this...

Make sure you tell those you care about you love them. It’s a simple yet powerful message. Nobody knows how their day is going to end. Whether it ends in tragedy or happiness. Whether you come home delighted or stressed. Whether you wish the day would never end or if the end of the day would come sooner. Tell those you care about you love them. You never know when those days are going to be snatched away from you. The most ordinary of accidents or unpredictable tragedies could rip someone important from you or rip you from those important to you. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring and nobody knows what today has in store. So tell them now rather than later because later may never come.
